Is My Vaginal Discharge Normal?

An important part of good sex is a happy and healthy body. What's important for that? A healthy vagina. And healthy vagina's have discharge. We've heard this question several times (you'd be surprised). Ladies, we aren't sure or just plain don't know what is a healthy vagina. So, let's talk about it! Our Crimson Love reports.

Vaginal health is so important and can have an affect other parts of your life. When your vagina is happy, you're happy too. When your vagina isn't happy, you can feel the affects in other parts of your life. You're a little less confident, a little more withdrawn, and a little more stressed out. An important key in your vaginal happiness is discharge.

What is it?

Take off your underwear and see a thin/ thick white-ish mucus? That's vaginal discharge. Is it normal, you ask? Well, first let's define what is it? Vaginal discharge is a secretion from the glands in the vaginal walls. It can sometimes be white and creamy or clear and it has no bad smell.

Is it normal?

Now that we have the definition covered, yes, vaginal discharge is very normal. However, the amount of discharge varies from woman to woman. Vaginal discharge also varies based on womens' menstrual cycles. According to Go Ask Alice, there are several kinds of discharge based on a womens' menstrual cycles. Check out their chart below.

What is its purpose

The purpose of discharge is to work as a self cleaning system for the vagina. It cleans the vagina of dead skin cells and other things that shouldn't be there. It also can be used as an indicator if there is something wrong.

What happens if something is wrong?

If there is something wrong with your vagina, your discharge will change colors. It will go from being clear or milky to brown-ish, greenish-yellow or a grey color. Also, it will develop an odor, it may become clumpy and cottage cheese-like and sometimes the amount of discharge will increase exponentially. Other things to look out for are itching, burning, and redness. If you notice any of these symptoms you should schedule to see your doctor.

Things to Consider - Your discharge production will change throughout your life. It changes during the course of your menstrual cycle, ovulation, sexual arousal and it will change as you age. If you are still unsure, contact your doctor. A huge part of your vaginal health is discharge. It's normal and can tell you a lot about your health!
