Leather Archives & Museum: Why It's a Must See

There's nothing sexier than the feel of real leather against your skin. Unless you're PETA. And even then--there's at least a quizzical fascination. As for BDSM, who doesn't get giddy at the idea of their partner lovingly pushing their sexual buttons? GetLusty for Couples is simply ecstatic to be based in Chicago, with its rich and interesting past in the leather community. So let's take a look at the museum dedicated to the legacy of leather.

* * *

Curious about kink? The Leather Archives and Museum, located in Rogers Park at 6418 N. Greenview Ave in Chicago, is more than just a room full of tanned hides. It is the continuing efforts by the leather lifestyle community to preserve and exhibit their history and culture for future generations. A virgin visitor might walk through the doors out of mild curiosity about the leather collection. LA&M offers an historical depth for the the visitor and removes it from the realm of the curious, planting it firmly in the realm of the scholarly.

The 10,000 sq ft (930 m2), two-story building houses:

  • Eight exhibition galleries;
  • A 1,425 sq ft (132.4 m2) climate controlled archival storage space;
  • A 164 seat auditorium;
  • A 600 sq ft (56 m2) reading library to house the research collections;
  • Various other spaces which serve as working space for staff, volunteers and researchers.
Collections

They have an extensive collection of historically-significant leathers, including a variety of hats and boots. There is also an ever-growing collection of patches from fetish clubs from around the world.

Despite the name, the collections at LA&M encompass much more than physical leather. The Teri Rose Memorial Library contains over 17,000 books and magazines. Additionally, there are extensive collections of fetish magazines, periodicals (one of their largest collections), as well as visual media such as photographs and film (some of which were previously unpublished, homemade documentaries of people’s lives or events). LA&M is also in the process of documenting the oral history of important people, places, and things in the Leather community.

Exhibits

The exhibit rooms showcase central aspects of alternative cultures as well as some of the important personages. You don't want to miss the stainless-steel, custom-made, male chastity device in The Dungeon Exhibit, or the vast collection of BDSM audio and video collection in The Leather Sins Screening Room.

The Leather Bar exhibit is, as one might imagine, devoted to leather bars, one of the early meeting places for the Leather community. Rather than a simple display, the room is modeled on an actual bar, and features Randy, a mannequin always ready to share a drink. It contains a plethora of memorabilia from famous bars.

There is also a room for the women: A Room of Her Own is an installation for the Women’s Leather History Project. Fakir Musafar (pictured to the left) receives considerable space. Several of his photographs are featured alongside memorabilia from his career.

The Etienne auditorium houses actual seats from the historic Paradise Theatre which opened in 1928, and was demolished in 1956. When one of the original Chicago leather bars closed down, the owners were forced to remove the original artwork from the walls. After finding its new home, Gold Coast owners re-painted their murals on panels, in case they had to move again. They moved locations 4 more times. Now the artwork is proudly displayed in the Etienne auditorium.

The museum accommodates to guest artists with a guest gallery (lovingly named G.A.G); a contemporary fetish gallery. Works by renowned and emerging artists are periodically displayed all year long. In addition to being used for LA&M’s film series, Pantheon of Leather Awards (now staged in Atlanta for 2012), and demonstrations, the 146 seat auditorium is available for a variety of events.

The Leather Archives and Museum is an extensive effort to preserve the cultures of Leather, Fetishism, Sadomasochism, and other alternative sexual practices. It's not just a museum, though, Lusties. The archives host a number of events, advocating for kink in our communities. Throughout the year they have jumble sales, auctions, art exhibitions, film festivals, and parties.

Simply put: the Leather Archives & Museum is a must visit!

The Leather Archives and Museum's hours: Thursday 11AM -7PM. Friday 11AM - 7pm. Saturday 11AM - 5PM. Sunday 11AM - 5PM. Don’t arrive too late; the last admission is 30 minutes before closing.

This Weekend! CineKink Chicago Film Festival

Are you interested in exploring a wide variety of sexuality through film? This weekend, CineKink will showcase sex-positive and kink-friendly films in a two night event. From documentary to drama, camp comedy to hot porn, the films recognize and encourage the positive depiction of sexuality and kink. GetLusty's Milan Weasley explores this exciting film festival in Chicago this weekend!

* * *

CineKink, founded in 2003, celebrates the exploration of sexuality and kink in film and television. CineKink holds an annual film festival in New York City,  celebrating sex positivity and kink in popular culture.

'The Kinky Film Festival' includes a short film competition, audience choice awards, presentations, parties and a gala kick-off fundraiser. This year they will hold the festival in the East Village, throughout Februrary, 2013.  The main theatre of events will be the Anthology Film Archives at 32 Second Avenue. Afterward, they hit the road and tour around the country, and soon it will make its way to Chicago!

Friday, November 16th, will be the first day. At Leather Archives & Museum, 6418 North Greenview, CineKink will screen the Best of CineKink 2012. With films named Petal to Pleasure, Smut Capital of America, What Makes Us Queer, and Tooshie Smooshie, the genres range from campy comedies to documentaries. The films start at 8pm, and afterward guests are invited to stay for snacks.

Saturday, the 17th, the festival returns to Leather Archives & Museum to show four more films opening with Sweet Prudence & the Erotic Adventure of Bigfoot at 2pm, and closing with Sirwiñakuy at 9pm.

After Sirwiñakuy, guests are invited to end the evening at The LRA - Chicagoland BDSM Dungeon and Leather Club. We haven't been able to double-verify that all are invited -- members and non-members, but we're assuming that this invitation is also extended to GetLusty for Couples readers, too!

For all you kinky filmmakers who might be interested in submitting short films for 2014, customary topics include, BDSM, leather and fetish, swinging, non-monogamy and polyamory, role-play and gender bending, sex work and sex geekery. As long as your film celebrates sex as a right of self-expression, CineKink will be happy to consider your submission. Call for entries can be found here.

In 2 Days! Ladies Night Out: Exploring Female Orgasm

Just 1 day left to register! After our chat with Cheryl Sloane of G Boutique, we got a call from Michelle Herzog, MSMFT about her upcoming event at G Boutique. We were already set to feature the event and now there's even more of a reason. Michelle Herzog explains more why she's leading an event on female orgasm and why you must attend! RSVP directly here.

* * *

Female Orgasm: It’s About the Journey, Not the Destination.

Female orgasm is something I have become very passionate about in the past few months. In preparation for a workshop I am giving in early November at G Boutique in Chicago, I began researching the female orgasm and all of its glory. What did I find? A Lot.

As a clinician, I see a variety of people who experience difficulty with intercourse and orgasm. In the U.S., we are taught a traditional model of intercourse, which frames sex as an activity and orgasm as the final goal. Think of this model as a game.

A game with a beginning, middle and end. Maybe a little bit of foreplay to start the game off right, throw in some intercourse when the players are ready, and by the end, everyone orgasms and calls it a night. Sound familiar?

It is my belief that how we feel and treat our sex lives should not be based on a standard (and very limited) way of thinking. Sex is fluid and different for everyone. Whether you orgasm or not, experiencing pleasure and connection with your partner or on your own can be a very powerful part of your sexual journey. I believe people can have fulfilling and amazing sex lives without the pressure of orgasm hanging over their heads. This is hard for people to hear because of how we are socialized to think about sex. Being open to new ways of thinking about and exploring sex are the first steps towards new levels of pleasure and excitement in the bedroom.

In my upcoming workshop, I will be inviting women to think outside the traditional box of what sex “should” look like. I will be educating about the different aspects of female orgasm, including the G-Spot and female ejaculation. Other topics include masturbation, mindful sex and orgasm-inducing techniques. Cheryl Sloane, the owner of G Boutique, will be demonstrating and educating about orgasm friendly products throughout the presentation. This is sure to be a fun and female friendly night out! More details can be found below.

Where: G Boutique 2131 N. Damen Ave. Chicago
When: Monday, November 5th at 7:15pm
Cost: $20.00
RSVP: Registration required. Please visit here to RSVP.

Podcast! Cheryl Sloane on Pleasing Your Partner & Owning Your Sexuality

G boutique opened in Chicago in 2002 as a lingerie and sex toy shop owned and operated by women, for women. Ten years later, it is one of the city's premier boutiques for selling top-notch products in an environment that is both comforting and empowering for women. At GetLusty, we're all about taking control of your own sexuality, so we caught up with owner Cheryl Sloane and recorded it for your listening pleasure. Here's what she had to say:

More on what we talked about:
  • Why the need for a shop like G Boutique? According to Cheryl, "To create an environment that promotes sexual education and a place where women can feel comfortable buying anything they needed for sex and romance."
  • Her advice to newer couples who are still getting to know each other? Take time to find out what pleases your significant other and learn about them — while orgasms are great, there is more to a healthy relationship than just climaxing!
  • Having difficulty achieving an orgasm with your partner? There may be lingering emotional, biological and physical factors involved, but relaxation and communication are key, Cheryl believes.
  • What are Cheryl's recommendations for couples looking to keep things fresh and exciting? If you have an interest in something, research it and get the information first before discussing it with your partner, so you can have an educated conversation and explore those secret fantasies together. (Hint, hint — Check out GetLusty!)
More about Cheryl:

Born and raised in Chicago, Cheryl Sloane lived and worked in Bucktown in Chicago for 15 years before opening g boutique. Here's how it happened: Cheryl and (former co-owner) Kari wanted to write erotic fiction.

After many brunches they got this crazy idea that Chicago wanted a boutique where women would feel comfortable buying everything they need for romance. Without a retail background, Cheryl called upon her theatre friends to help design a comfortable boutique where people would enjoy shopping. G boutique was always imagined as a place to build and support community. That was in 2002. Now, ten years later, she is thrilled to be helping people explore their intimate relationships in a safe, friendly environment. Connect with Cheryl and the g boutique staff on their website, on Facebook and Twitter @gboutique, or visit G Boutique, located at 2131 North Damen in Chicago, Illinois.

5 Surprise Places to Have Crazy Apartment Sex

You might not be surprised the bed is included in this list. Yeah, OK, so it's pretty usual. But how about some additions? Have you really made the most of your apartment for sex, lately? GetLusty for Couples' Bethany Kibblesmith is here talking about making the most of your humble abode.

* * *

We’ve already covered having wonderful ideas for having sex in your kitchen in depth, but there are plenty of other places, in even the tiniest of apartments, to get it on. Let's explore a few places in your apartment you kind try out. Think missionary position in your bedroom is getting a little stale? Check out these rooms... I dare you!

#1 The Bed (Duh.)

The tried-and-true. The go-to. And, depending on the size of your place, perhaps the only comfortable, if not disturbingly multi-functional, surface. However: don’t discount this furniture workhorse as been-there-done-that boring. Have you hung over the edge while being entered from behind? Been tied to the posts and teased mercilessly? Engaged with such raw passion the sheets were damp, torn and/or in a heap on the floor? Used the edge as leverage; the headboard for torque?

Maybe it’s time to shoo the cat, hide the magazines, change the sheets (or don’t) and sexplore.

#2 Closets

There’s something inherently naughty about doing it in a small, dark space amid winter coats and cocktail dresses. How about pretending you’re at a party and the house is full of guests? Sneak in, shut the door and cover your mouths so no one will hear you (wink). A closet can also be a boon for those into BDSM. Put the winter coats and cocktail dresses elsewhere and tie your lover to the bar. Shut the door while they squirm and you plan your loving torture.

#3 Bathroom

Before you say “eww”, remember: this is where the shower is. The bathtub. The edge of the bathtub. The strategically placed medicine cabinet mirror. While it’s true natural lubrication can lose some of its slickness in water.

Who’s to say you can’t stash a bottle of lube amongst the shampoo and conditioner? Have a sensual, exploratory bath? Or try the tub dry and enjoy rinsing off the fruits of your labor afterward. What about erotically soaping each other’s genitals with something gentle and organic then revisiting #1?

Being clean is a must for anal play and oral sex, so respect the erotic oasis that is your bathroom and get busy.

#4 The Laundry Room

While technically not a part of the apartment (unless you’ve got a fancy in-unit thing going on), a shared laundry room can be tremblingly thrilling. But it is not for the faint of heart. In light of the distinct possibility of neighbors walking in, the laundry room is for those who enjoy flirting with being caught. Still with me? Let's proceed.

Like kitchen counters, washers and dryers are (usually) a good height for serious penetration - with the added bonus of, should you invest a few quarters, rhythmic motion. Don't discount the folding table. Sundry props (never use anyone else's belongings). Or your storage unit, if you have one (aspects of #3 are applicable).

Proceed with caution! Should you be discovered, there could be serious consequences. No fooling. Should you get away with it, however, it could become a powerful bonding experience you’ll reminisce about for years.

#5 The Balcony

Not everyone is lucky enough to have a balcony. But here in Chicago, they are aplenty. For some of the less private models, or those on the ground floor, you'll have to get creative. Why not use the feeling of being exposed to induce a delicious sense of danger while knowing at any time you can rush back in to #1, #2 or #3?

Kick back, have a glass of wine and quietly talk dirty to each other while people pass on the street. Or how about wearing a skirt sans panties and allowing your lover a long look when the coast is clear? A strategically placed garment can increase your opportunities to push the boundaries a bit farther. Hand jobs, anyone? Or why not experiment with orgasm denial?

If you’re fortunate enough to have a private balcony, get out there! Open air and a healthy streak of exhibitionism can be extremely erotic. Drag out a sleeping bag and make like your camping. Lean coquettishly over the edge as if the neighborhood is the most interesting thing you’ve seen all day and let your lover secretly finger you. For those without balconies, don’t fret: why not apply a few of the suggestions in front of a window or two?

Stay tuned for the next installment of apartment sex. We’ll explore props-around-the-house and how to put your furniture to good use!

Feel at Home at Tulip Toy Gallery

This article is by GetLusty for Couples contributing writer Greg Dorn. Greg writes primarily about business and events around the Chicago area to keep couple's sex lives, fresh, fun and stimulating. With a girlfriend of over 2 years, Greg has visited a plethora of sex toy shops to keep his own sex life exhilarating and electrifying. After visiting Tulip Toy Gallery, he thinks you will too. There are two Tulip Galleries, but this one focused on Tulip in Andersonville.

* * *

The minute you step inside Tulip Toy Gallery, you immediately know you're in the quirky and hip Andersonville neighborhood. Located at 1480 W Berwyn Ave directly off the Berwyn Red Line stop, it's a hop, skip and jump away from virtually anywhere in the city.

The shop is small, yet packs a big punch. The selection of erotic goodies and sexy outfits will keep you there much longer than you probably had expected.

Like the area itself, the shop's selling point is it's warm and welcoming environment. Known primarily as a must-visit destination for the surrounding lesbian community, the friendly staff will keep you engaged for hours. You come for the items, you stay for the conversation. The knowledgeable staff offers a non-judgmental environment, as conversation, chitchat and laughter fill this tiny gem. Shy shoppers be aware, the staff will joyfully talk your ear off (and offer you ways to nibble on them).

Oh yea, and they have anything you can possibly want for an erotic evening reserved only for your wildest fantasies (believe me, this place will help make them a reality). The sex toys for both men and women are plentiful.

This north side Chicago joint even lets you try items out of the box so you know exactly what you're getting yourself into (or into you). The toys aren't the only items lining the walls of this eye-catching gallery. You'll find a terrific selection of books and erotic movies for all interests. Come alone, come with a friend or a whole group. With the hands-on experience, you may never leave!

This is a guest post by Greg Dorn.

Greg is a self-employed day trader who loves writing. He aims to think about sex whenever possible, including a variety of ways to enhance his own love life. If you don't see Greg crunching numbers, you'll find him enjoying the beauty of his wonderful girlfriend around Chicago. Offensive: Are You the Sexiest Woman Networking?

As an outspoken entrepreneur, I've had to deal with sexism internationally. But I never expected a place where sexism would be so apparent. The Chicago Interactive Social Club, a place where advertising professionals network (and where I had gone networking several times) would stoop to such a low. Here, the CISC and Maxim (who's had it's share of sexism) are hosting a networking event where they encourage women to dress up like "sexy devils". And the men? Nothing. They just come. And stare. Excuse me? I'm an MA-educated, speak, author and award-winning entrepreneur. And you want me to come to a party with your friends and stare at me for $1,000? In a word: fuck off.

Ladies & or gents. Want to fight back? Tweet @ChicagoISC and tell them it's not ok. You can also share on Facebook, LinkedIn or your networks. Find their page on Facebook and also comment there. Don't let them objectify women so blatantly without some fight!

Sample tweet: Shame! @ChicagoISC A women only 'sexy devil costume contest'!? I DON'T APPROVE! http://bit.ly/TlGzuB #sexism

Any other Twitter recommendations? Share them below!

* * *

Someone please tell me I’m having a nightmare. Please tell me I was thrown into a time machine and forced back to the 50's. Whatever you do, just don’t tell me that the invitation below for a local networking group's Halloween party  – with its Sexy Little Devil costume contest – is anything but a crude and offensive joke.

MAXIM Halloween 2012

“Join the Chicago Interactive Social Club as we team up with MAXIM this Halloween to Unleash Your Inner Devil at an amazing VIP party at Untitled. This once in a lifetime experience will be like no other event you have seen in Chicago this year. Features include Jim Beam Devil's Cut Cocktails, Maxim Models, Giveaways and more! Costumes are encouraged and there will be a Sexy Little Devil costume contest for women for a $1,000 cash prize! So, don't get left out and RSVP for this FREE Event today at RSVP@ChicagoISC.com. Please include full names for you and your guests else you will not be added to the list. Thank You!”

A little background. Chicago Interactive Social Club is not a Gentlemen’s Club. It’s not a geisha training center, nor a Las Vegas club where five members of the Pussy Cat Dolls who can’t find better gigs continue to perform. It’s a networking group for professionals who work at the intersection of technology, marketing, sales, and creative services. Now why, may you ask, would a group like this organize a “Sexy Little Devil” costume contest for women?

Before we answer that burning question (get it, devil, burning), let’s start with why any argument defending the decision to organize a sexy little devil contest is bullshit. Don’t bother saying it’s fine because it’s only a networking group or that it’s catering to a certain demographic. And I don’t even want to hear it’s MAXIM's fault.

Because here’s the sad and honest truth: Encouraging women to attend a networking event dressed as sexy devils in order to potentially win a big cash prize is degrading and objectifying. This could have been a costume contest for all attendees. It could have been a costume contest for women who could come dressed as anything or anyone. But someone, and I’m sure it was a guy, decided it would be cool to have women come dressed as sex objects. And that, in my opinion, is just plain gross.
Here’s some advice, boys: if women need to bare their breasts in order for you to increase event attendance, perhaps you should rethink your group's direction. Or how about this: choose a better sponsor.

Now that we’ve stopped trying to rationalize blatant sexism, misogyny and stupidity, let’s look at the broader implications of this contest.

The organizers of this event probably don’t even realize how offensive a sexy little devil contest is. And this says a lot about them and about our industry in general. And there are also many women who will say, “it’s no big deal,” which worries me even more. What do you say to a woman who thinks it’s fine to encourage others to dress like sex trade workers for the possibility of a financial reward? “I don’t happen to enjoy the cool wind on my mostly bare tush while I talk about Facebook and Twitter engagement”?

Maybe it’s not an accident that this happening, considering what I observe while attending networking events in the technology and marketing industries. The guys are average. Average height, weight, and intelligence, and you can tell they don’t put a ton of energy into how they look. The women, on the other hand, are often gorgeous, not to mention thin, sophisticated, and brilliant. No, they’re not wearing breast-bearing, naughty Halloween costumes, but they are clearly putting a lot more effort into their appearance than the guys have to. Now we know why: a plain Jane will not do as well as a sexy little devil.

Well, someone has got to call a spade a spade, and I guess it’ll just have to be me. I’m offended and disappointed that an event like this would be offered and promoted. Someday, I hope to tell my daughter about the crazy old days, when women were objectified and asked to get dressed up as sexy devils to win some money at a networking event. Sadly, it looks like that conversation will not be happening any time soon.

3 Reasons to Try Roller Derby For Better Sex

Last week, a reader came to us and asked if we could write about women in the roller derby. He mentioned that his wife had joined. He raved about how it had changed her (emotional and sexual life) for the better. We thought this one would be a bit challenging to write an article about, but we gladly took it on!

Well, after we saw a group of roller derby participants at SlutWalk Chicago, we knew what he was talking about. Turns out roller derby is bad ass and has a lot of pros--for your emotional and sexual health! Our Crimson Love reports.

* * *

Roller derby is the sport of bad ass women on roller skates pushing, shoving, and scoring. What's not to love? But who knew roller derby could work wonders for your confidence, emotional health, sex and over all well being?

Yes, it's true. Let me explain.

#1 Tone your body

Roller derby is great for your health! In spite of all of the bumps and bruises, roller derby is a great cardio workout. Why? It's great for your legs, and rear end. If buns, thighs and cardio don't do it for you, pushing other girls around will likely still be a fun work out.

#2 Stay mentally sharp

Mentally, this tough sport will also help you stay sharp. It takes real skill to keep yourself up in skates, while also watching out for other team mates. You'll have to be good to keep yourself going. If you're the best, maybe you can even win a few trophies. And who hates trophies?

Also, take the issue of stress. Stress can keep you from being mentally sharp. If you have a lot of stress, roller derby will certainly help work out tension. Get aggressive! Be forceful! Learn where your dominance comes from. Maybe you can also take that back to your bedroom? Be a force to be reckoned with on wheels while you push and rough up other ladies on the floor.

#3 Boost confidence

Lastly, roller derby is great for your confidence. While your body is getting into shape and getting stronger, and you're working out some anger and stress you are becoming a better version of yourself.

You will become more comfortable, confident, and you will feel sexier. When you feel confident and sexy, it shows in the bedroom (that makes it helpful for both you and your man!)

If you know how to roller skate, don't mind some bumps and bruises and want to work it out in all the best ways, join a roller derby club near you. There are roller derbies in almost every major city. Chicago has The Windy City Rollers! Follow them on Twitter @windycityroller.

Today! GetLusty FlashDance Mob @ SlutWalk Chicago

Do you want to have an awesome time for a good cause? GetLusty is featuring our very first event along side SlutWalk Chicago! PS: RSVP to our Facebook event!

Haven't heard of SlutWalk? SlutWalk aims to combat the myth of "the slut" and the culture of victim blaming that prevails the world over. Their mission is to enforce the truth that those who experience sexual assault are never at fault, ever.

Why?

SlutWalk seeks to create a consent culture (versus rape culture), and we're totally behind that. We think consensual sex is wonderful sex. SlutWalk is all about marching, walking, parading, rocking, and rolling in demand of a revised cultural attitude toward sexual assault and rape.

Again--at GetLusty, we are all about healthy, amazing, consensual sex. We also want to take the shame away from sex and create an environment focused on sex positivity.
